The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc with nearly every facet of American life, from eating and socializing to working. Schooling has not escaped the destruction, as colleges and universities across the nation disbanded in-class instruction. At the high school level, most seniors had to endure canceled graduations, resulting in such oddities as drive-thru ceremonies. Even proms were reduced to Zoom gatherings in some cases. Academically, many schools finished up the year via online instruction, but that’s far from an ideal solution. The question remains, when the next academic year begins, what are schools’ plans for continuing education?
The ramifications of this question are huge. Notably, colleges and universities have not been refunding tuition payments simply because their educational process has shifted online. This begs the question for some students — and likely, their parents — as to whether or not higher education is worth the cost until traditional learning returns. Take the case of an out-of-state resident studying at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Tuition and fees for a single year are a whopping $73,718, or more than $6,000 per month on a calendar-year basis. If there are no classes to attend, it’s worth examining if that amount of tuition makes sense, or if a gap year is in order.
From the perspective of the institution, the logistics of reopening a university can vary greatly based on the size and location of the institution. Drake University, for example, has a student body of less than 5,000, making any choices about how to deliver its educational product manageably. Additionally, the institution is in the heart of Iowa, a state which has largely missed the negative ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The University of Central Florida, on the other hand, is not only located in one of the hotspots of the breakout nationwide, but it also has an enrollment approaching 70,000 — yet UCF is currently planning on resuming in-person education.
For this study, GOBankingRates referenced The Chronicle of Higher Education’s tracking information to determine whether schools are planning for either in-person instruction or a hybrid instruction model. Additional information collected included the total enrollment and the 2018 endowment at each school, in addition to current in-state and out-of-state rates for tuition and fees.
Based on the results, parents and students alike can start preparing for what life will look like come autumn. Whichever course your school takes, be prepared for the fact that things may change again in the near future, as at this point no one is entirely sure when the country will bounce back from COVID-19.

Methodology: To determine which colleges would be reopening in the fall, GOBankingRates began by referencing The Chronicle of Higher Education’s college reopening plan tracking information. GOBankingRates looked into major schools currently planning for either in-person instruction or a hybrid instruction model in fall 2020 and provided (1) their plan for reopening as sourced from official school announcements, (2) their total enrollment, (3) 2018 endowment from U.S. News & World Report and (4) their most current available annual in-state and out-of state tuition and fees rates, sourced from each school’s website. All information was collected on and up to date as of May 22, 2020.
