Eric Adams has been mayor for a grand total of nine days, but that hasn’t prevented him from already managing to make headlines and attract the ire of many on the left. At a recent press conference where he discussed his intentions of getting the New York’s workers back into the office, Adams said:
“My low skill workers, cooks, my dishwashers, my messengers, my shoe shine people, those who work in Dunkin Donuts, they don’t have the academic skills to sit in a corner office.”
It appears this is Adams’ unfortunate idea of advocating for these workers he deems “low skill”.
There is absolutely no such thing as a low-skill worker.
I worked at Dunkin Donuts during the summer when I was home from college, and at Aeropostale in the mall when I was at school. The Dunkin Donuts job in particular was unequivocally the most difficult job I will ever have.
My manager was probably one of the cruelest, most sadistic, and mentally abusive people I have ever encountered in person. She got pleasure out of treating her employees like dirt, belittling us, cursing at and yelling at us in front of our coworkers and even customers whenever she found an excuse to do so. It’s almost a running joke in the area that she cannot hold on to staff, and considering the fact that I was throwing up literally every single morning before work the anxiety was so bad, it’s not difficult to understand why she has that problem. One day, after she had my coworker in tears after she screamed at her so loudly the entire gas station was watching all because my coworker put too much cream cheese on the bagel she was making, I decided I couldn’t take it anymore. I still needed a little more money so I put in a two-week notice, but I was gone.
Of course, after my notice was in she let me know how much she valued me and that I was always welcome back to work there.
Obviously, it’s not just a sh*tty manager that makes these jobs so difficult. Anyone who has ever worked in food service will tell you it is not for the faint of heart. The level of multi-tasking required just to keep up with the drive-thru, let alone dealing with the rude customers or the person who comes in and orders enough food and drinks for over twenty people with no notice beforehand whatsoever is a skill.
How long would Eric Adams last working for my former manager?
The idea of a “low skill worker” is a myth, and a myth created with very specific intentions. “Low skill worker” is an idea created by corporations and the elites in an effort to justify and make people comfortable with suppressed wages, nothing more. Forget Eric Adams, the CEO of Dunkin’ could not have worked for my former manager, and I can definitively say that without a shadow of a doubt. I mean, I don’t think the franchise owner who hired her could do it, either.
In 2017 at Dunkin’, I was making a whopping $10 an hour.
Believe me, if society was at all just, Dunkin’s Crew Members would be making $25 an hour. People like Eric Adams would lead you to believe otherwise, though.
