Sustainability managers, chief growth officers, and cloud engineers are among the 15 most in-demand jobs in the UK — just as the hiring battle is showing signs of cooling down.
That’s thanks to worries about climate change, cyber threats, and growth in 2023 fuelling job creation in these fields, according to research by LinkedIn published Wednesday. The professional network analyzed job title data across member profiles from January 2018 to July 2022 to rank roles by growth.
Yet UK demand for staff is shrinking at the fastest pace since the first pandemic lockdowns. And the ratio of job openings to applicants started to decline at the end of last year, LinkedIn figures showed. In the UK there are about two applicants competing for every open role, while in Germany and the US, there’s about one candidate per position.
“This year we’re going to see companies continue to hire staff who can help them tackle the big issues of the day. In 2023 those challenges are sustainability and cybersecurity,” said Josh Graff, LinkedIn’s managing director for EMEA and Latin America. “And despite the economic uncertainty we’re facing in the UK and around the world, businesses still want to grow — which means sales roles are still in high demand.”
Job competition is less fierce than in pre-pandemic times, LinkedIn data on the ratio of open jobs to applicants showed. And, despite mass layoffs in tech and finance, there are growing opportunities available for those skilled in customer success, sustainability, sales, or product operations.
There are also plenty of people looking to change roles in 2023 across the world. Around 60% of Britons are considering switching jobs this year, compared to about half of Italians, with demand for higher pay as the main motivation to leave.
“Companies still need to work hard to attract and retain talent,” said Karin Kimbrough, chief economist at LinkedIn.
