Summer is here, and whether you're relaxing on a beach, hiking in the mountains, or enjoying a staycation, one thing is certain: Joy is a common feeling among vacationers. The smile is often considered the perfect expression of joy, as it reaches our eyes and creates what's known as a Duchenne smile. This genuine smile has various benefits, including improved physical health, better recovery after illness, and stronger connections with others.
But how can we bring this feeling of joy into our work? Imagine sitting at your desk, experiencing joy and smiling while working. Ready for the challenge? Let's start with step 1: joy brainstorming. Take a moment to brainstorm what brings you joy. Grab colorful Post-Its and a pen, set a timer for 10 minutes, and jot down your ideas. If needed, think about the last time you felt joy and recall the details. Close your eyes, remember those joyful moments, and let yourself smile again.
Now, in step 2, it's time to filter your results. Look at all your beautiful memories, marvel at how many you remembered, and consider who you can share these joyful moments with later. Filter out ideas that can be implemented at work, keeping in mind that some ideas may be specific to holiday destinations. For example, you can print and hang pictures from your last vacation at your (home) office or organize a game night with colleagues. Remember, food can also bring joy, so why not keep your favorite "snack of joy" close to your office desk? Get creative and pick at least three ideas that you'd love to bring to work. This step should fill you with joy and excitement.
The final step, step 3, is all about taking action. Choose the easiest idea from your top three picks and start implementing it. By doing so, you'll create a joyful work environment inside and out, making joy an integral part of your work experience. And if that doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will! Enjoy the process and let joy be your guide.
