Gen Z members, despite facing challenges such as the pandemic, social unrest, and mental health struggles, surprisingly maintain a positive outlook on their future. This perspective is in stark contrast to how older generations perceive Gen Z. According to Gallup data released recently, members of Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2011, overwhelmingly express optimism about their futures. However, they feel that their schools and communities have not adequately prepared them for what lies ahead. While 76% of Gen Z respondents believe they have a bright future ahead, only 44% feel prepared for it. Additionally, 82% believe they will achieve their goals.
Interestingly, older generations tend to have less optimism when it comes to the future of teenagers and young adults. It is worth noting that Black Gen Z members exhibit the highest level of optimism regarding their future and job prospects, with 44% strongly agreeing that they have a great future ahead. This sentiment is shared by 30% of Hispanic respondents and 31% of White respondents.
However, Gen Z also reports feeling a lack of support networks and challenges when it comes to entering and navigating the world. Additionally, they express feeling unchallenged by the material taught in school. It is important to note that it is normal for adolescents to not have all their goals figured out at this stage in life.
