San Rafael Home Depot employee arrested on charge of embezzling $1.2 million

An employee at a Home Depot in San Rafael was arrested on a charge of embezzling $1.2 million in cash from the store, officials confirmed.

The San Rafael Police Department received a call from the store on Tuesday alleging that the employee had embezzled approximately $1.2 million from the store since August 2022, the department said in a Facebook post. Home Depot had come to this conclusion via an internal investigation.

The suspect admitted to police that she had been taking cash from the store since the previous year, and she had over $8,000 in her possession at the time of her arrest, according to SRPD. She was booked into Marin County Jail on felony embezzlement charges.

After obtaining a warrant to search the suspect’s home, SRPD detectives found some cash and a large amount of “designer merchandise” that police suspected had been purchased with embezzled money.

SRPD detectives acquired an enhancement on the suspect’s bail due to the volume of cash she had allegedly embezzled and the possibility of her being a flight risk, police said. The name of the suspect has not been released.

The Home Depot is at 111 Shoreline Parkway, near San Quentin State Prison. Neither SRPD nor Home Depot representatives responded to SFGATE’s request for comment by publication time.
