About 82% of employees are at risk of burnout this year—but only half of employers design work with well-being in mind



An increasing burnout epidemic is spreading across offices internationally. The latest 2024 Global Talent Trends report by Mercer, a prominent HR consulting firm, highlights a concerning trend. Despite the heightened awareness about burnout, a significant majority of employers are failing to establish a work culture that prioritizes employee well-being. This has resulted in over 80% of employees being at risk of burnout this year.


 Factors Contributing to Burnout

1. **Financial Strain**: Around 43% of employees identified financial strain as a contributing factor to their burnout risk.

2. **Exhaustion**: 40% of employees cited exhaustion as a significant factor affecting their well-being.

3. **Excessive Workload**: A staggering 37% mentioned struggling with an excessive workload, adding to their risk of burnout.


### Employer Perspective

Despite the detrimental effects of burnout on productivity and engagement, there is a notable mismatch between the impact of burnout and the attention employers are giving to this issue. The survey findings indicate that less than half of employers actively design work with employee well-being in mind. Additionally, less than a third of employers consider avoiding investment in reducing employee burnout as a considerable risk for their companies this year.

The report highlights a significant gap between the awareness of burnout and the actions taken by employers to mitigate its effects. Without a fundamental shift in workplace culture to prioritize employee well-being, the burnout epidemic is likely to persist, adversely impacting both employees and the companies they work for.
