How Women Will Lead The AI Revolution



The prominence of generative AI has sparked intense discourse over the past year, with the excitement and concerns set to intensify as AI tools continue to evolve and proliferate in the market. As part of a series of articles for Women’s History Month, I engaged in a conversation with Matt Strain, also known as the AI Whisperer, to explore the pivotal role of women in the AI landscape. With an extensive background, including managing a scholarship program for women in technology at Adobe’s Research Lab, Matt offers valuable insights into the present and future of women in AI.

Representation and Challenges

Reflecting on his engineering education, William Arruda highlights the historical underrepresentation of women in the field of technology, a trend that has persisted over the years. Matt Strain reveals a disheartening decline in the number of women pursuing computer science degrees since the 1980s, with the introduction of personal computers marking a pivotal point. Early marketing targeted boys and the subsequent association with gaming entrenched the belief that technology was a male-dominated domain, thereby impeding the participation of girls in the technical arena. Beyond marketing, numerous barriers such as shortage of role models, educational biases, pipeline leaks, workplace disparities, and inherent biases in AI technology have collectively dissuaded women from entering and thriving in STEM fields.

The Potential for Change

In contrast to the somber trends, Matt Strain remains optimistic about the transformative potential of AI in bridging the gender gap in technology. The advent of Generative AI, exemplified by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has marked a significant paradigm shift, presenting a more level playing field for millions of individuals without technical backgrounds. Notably, women already hold key positions in areas critical for leading the AI revolution, such as HR, ethical AI governance, educational leadership, and change management. Research supported by Harvard Business Review substantiates the superior performance of women in leadership competencies crucial for ethical and sustainable AI deployment.

Empowering Women in AI

The evolving landscape of AI aligns with the traditional strengths of women, necessitating a paradigm shift that values skills such as creativity, interdisciplinary thinking, effective communication, and collaboration. The utilization of Generative AI tools demands a departure from the traditional emphasis on technical expertise, thereby ushering in a new era where women's leadership traits are precisely what is needed. Consequently, women are uniquely positioned to spearhead the impending organizational and societal transformations driven by AI.

Seizing Opportunities and Addressing Challenges

While acknowledging the nascent stage of AI adoption across industries, Matt emphasizes the potential for individuals, including women, to embark on the AI journey. Encouraging a proactive approach, he advocates cultivating curiosity, engaging with AI tools, championing change within organizations, and fostering discussions to usher in AI awareness and adoption. Amidst this optimism, Matt urges caution against the inclusion of sensitive or private data in AI interactions, underscoring the need for responsible and ethical usage of AI technologies.
