I loved my company but still felt bored and uninspired at work. I carefully planned my next steps and found my dream job.

In my previous banking role, I reached a stage where the office became a source of dread. Encumbered by bureaucratic red tape, I longed for autonomy to innovate new training methods and flexible work arrangements. Despite the organization's revered status, after 11 years, I experienced symptoms akin to burnout, which I later recognized as rust out—a result of underutilized skills, limited learning opportunities, and mundane tasks.

Career Evolution:

My tenure at the bank saw significant growth, transitioning from sales to training and development across six states, and ultimately to marketing. Notably, my passion lay in training, an area where I excelled, especially during the banking crisis of 2008. However, the slow pace of innovation due to excessive approvals stifled my creativity, leading to a profound sense of dissatisfaction.

Self-Reflection and Energy Assessment:

Recognizing the need for change, I engaged in introspection, journaling, and energy evaluation. This involved categorizing tasks into energy suckers, stallers, and surgery, revealing a dearth of activities that ignited my creativity and energy.

Embracing Transition:

After deliberation, I made the bold decision to depart from the bank, committing to aligning my talents with my career purpose. Though the transition would pose challenges, I resolved to stay true to my values while seeking the next step that aligned with my aspirations and talent themes.

Unapologetic Self-Presentation:

During interviews, I boldly voiced my strengths, convictions, and aspirations, unapologetically expressing my preferences and strengths—a calculated risk that ultimately paid off.

Discovery of Dream Job:

Following a nine-month journey, I secured a role as a talent management director in a technology organization, resolutely presenting my authentic self. Embracing an unconventional approach further highlighted my unique abilities, garnering recognition for transforming mundane data into visually engaging and comprehensible formats.

Fulfillment and Growth:

Despite an initial pay cut, the intangible rewards of cultural fit and fulfilling work outweighed the sacrifice. The role not only provided intrinsic satisfaction but also facilitated rapid salary increments, transforming the initial setback into significant financial progression.

By refusing to succumb to rust out and instead pursuing a strategic plan, I embarked on a transformative journey that culminated in the realization of my dream job—a role that continues to bring fulfillment and unparalleled growth opportunities. This experience underscores the importance of resilience, self-assessment, and unyielding pursuit of personal and professional fulfillment.
