My initial experience with remote work began in 2020 amidst the pandemic. Working as a corporate content creator, my company shifted us to working from home. Given that all my work happens on a computer, transitioning from the office to the kitchen table was seamless. I found remote work highly enjoyable as it allowed me to manage my own schedule, attend to errands throughout the day, and increase productivity due to the absence of office distractions like small talk.
In 2021, I ventured into a new role as an SEO manager who mandated a full-time office presence. Feeling stifled by the micromanagement, I opted to quit and pursue freelance writing. While the flexibility was a plus, the lack of guaranteed pay and benefits prompted me to seek stability once more. I eventually landed a promising full-time digital marketing job that required in-office presence.
Upon interviewing for a position as an SEO specialist at a digital marketing agency 80 miles away from my home in Philadelphia, I was intrigued by the benefits and growth opportunities they offered. However, their strict five-day-a-week office policy clashed with my preference for remote work. Despite the attractive salary and benefits, the lack of flexibility led me to decline the offer.
I acknowledge the importance of flexibility in my workday. Engaging in tasks like grocery shopping, vet visits with my cat, or mid-day exercises are vital to my well-being, which remote work allows me to do effortlessly. I have also recognized my peak productivity occurs when I can immerse myself in work with instrumental music playing, free from distractions.
I have since found a more accommodating position as a public relations and placement coordinator at an advertising agency. This role provides benefits and a respectful work environment while offering the flexibility to work both from the office and remotely. I am open to occasional office visits but prefer the freedom to work from alternative locations like coffee shops, bookstores, or even friends' houses.
While I appreciate the benefits of working in an office, I am committed to ensuring it aligns with my terms. I have no intention of returning to a job that necessitates five days in the office, as the flexibility of remote work has significantly enhanced my quality of life, a priority for me.
