Fashion's biggest night of the year has arrived, which means the Met Gala 2024 memes, jokes, and TikToks have taken over.
The hotly-anticipated event brings out the biggest celebrities in the most outrageous and decadent couture, but even more than that, it inspires the greatest internet memes. While the Met Gala serves as a charity event that supports the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, it's also a full night of entertainment and an excuse to judge people's outfits from the comfort of your home, and maybe even in sweatpants.
This year's theme for Met Gala 2024 is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, with the official dress code being “The Garden of Time.” The exhibit will showcase 400 years of fashion and “will explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion.” The carpet was a lush greenish-blue color with a white center and surrounded by foliage, giving that true "Garden of Time" feel.
Despite the posh nature of the entire evening, it wouldn't be a high-class event without some snarky comments about outfits, the setting, and literally anything you can think of. It's a reminder that even if most people aren't invited to this exclusive event, they can still post hilarious jokes online about it.
Check out Teen Vogue's round-up of the best jokes, memes, and TikToks from Met Gala 2024.
People have a lot to say about the carpet itself
As we said, the carpet's theme was “The Garden of Time,” but that didn't mean there weren't plenty of funny comments about the very green carpet and tent. Ira Madison called it a “leftover Evermore set," referring to Taylor Swift's earthy album, while Gabe Bergado called it a “Baja Blast” carpet.
Jason Derulo has fallen down the Met steps
If you haven't laughed about Jason Derulo “falling” down the stairs, you haven't lived. The ongoing lore is that Derulo did a dramatic backflip down the red carpet stairs in 2015. Unfortunately, or fortunately for him, he did not actually fall down the stairs, but the internet took it and ran with it — even making jokes nearly a decade later.
The photoshops took over
It wouldn't be a Met Gala without people photoshopping the most ridiculous things on the red carpet. From the famed Oompa Loompa actor who worked at the disastrous Willy Wonka Experience in Glasgow, to Taylor Swift's private jet, there's room for everyone on the Met Gala carpet.
Zendaya is the Katniss to Law Roach's Cinna
As co-host of Met Gala 2024, Zendaya had to show up and show OUT — and she came with her trusty superstar stylist, Law Roach. And of course, the Hunger Games jokes had to be made.

Ariana Grande “teases” something coming from Wicked
While speaking with La La Anthony on the red carpet, Ariana Grande said that fans can expect something Wicked-related soon ahead of the film premiere later this year.
Kim Kardashian's waist was snatched to the high heavens
Lana Del Rey's giving Yellowjackets
The musician showed up to the Met Gala carpet adorned in a woodland creature-type outfit that some said reminded them of the “Antler Queen” from the show Yellowjackets. If you haven't seen it, there are some heavy themes, so hopefully, Lana is going just for couture and not the brutal Antler Queen.
The memes are endless

They don't call the Met Gala "fashion's biggest night" for nothing. It's the first Monday in May, which means, tonight, A-list actors, artists, musicians, designers, and more will gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, celebrating the Costume Institute's latest exhibit, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." On a literal note, they're all going to gather by the Temple of Dendur and probably enjoy some damn delicious food and great music. But to us, the general public, the most important part of the Met Gala is the red carpet. Tonight, these are the best menswear looks that graced it.
By the Met Gala's theme and the dress code, "Garden of Time," we're giving prime placement to the guys who weren't afraid to turn a look tonight. This is the Met Gala, after all, so the bolder, the better. The best-dressed guys below aren't the ones who deigned to play it safe; they're the ones who dove in head-first, going all-in to celebrate the theme, whether through floral details or nostalgic pieces from the archives. Below are the guys who truly are Reawakening Fashion.
What would fashion's biggest night be without some jewels?
There was no shortage of glitz on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, thanks in part to a plethora of glittering accessories worn by the world's biggest celebrities.
With a theme of "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" and a dress code of "The Garden of Time," the stars leaned into romantic, indulgent fashion. To amplify the glamour, many opted for glittering diamonds, floral-inspired gems, and other unique creations.
With a diamond necklace chicly draped over her shoulder, Pamela Anderson proved that sometimes jewelry can steal the show. Demi Moore's sculptural gown was inspired by a Cartier necklace, which she wore along with the heart-shaped ensemble.
And, of course, there were carats upon carats upon carats.
Here are all the best jewelry moments from the 2024 Met Gala red carpet.
Cardi B's Baubles
Cardi B shut down the red carpet with the largest dress of the evening — and perhaps even in Met Gala history. Along with her voluminous black dress and beehive-style headpiece, the rapper accessorized with glitzy green jewels.
Her massive green necklace, earrings, and rings not only matched the greenery inside the event (nodding to "The Garden of Time" dress code) but also her long green nails.
Demi Moore's Meaningful Necklace
Demi Moore stepped out in a stunning gown (made entirely of wallpaper!) by Harris Reed. Along with romantic accents like pink and white floral design and heart-shaped sculptural element, the actress donned a knockout emerald Cartier necklace (with matching earrings) that, according to Reed, was the inspiration behind the floral gown.
"It all started with this incredible Cartier necklace that Demi is wearing," Reed told Ashley Graham on the Vogue red carpet. "It was inspired by the floral feeling it gave me. The whole piece is made out of vintage archival wallpaper. We repurposed it. It’s 11,000 hours of silk embroidery that we’ve repurposed into this idea of her blooming on the carpet. I wanted to be the vines to her thorns."
Demi Lovato's De Beers Bling
The singer coordinated her silver Prabal Gurung gown with De Beers jewelry — which included a 63-carat diamond necklace — for an icy-chic look.
Of course, she also made sure to wear her brilliant engagement ring from her fiancé, Jutes.
Jennifer Lopez's Jaw-Dropping Necklace
As a co-chair of the 2024 Met Gala, Lopez sparkled on the red carpet — literally.
She accented her glittering Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown with dazzling Tiffany & Co. jewels and wore her hair in a slightly undone topknot. Her necklace alone included one diamond over 20 carats and diamonds of over 75 total carats from the Blue Book 2024: Tiffany Celéste Collection.
Pamela Anderson's Pandora Moment
Pamela Anderson made her Met Gala debut in an ethereal Oscar de la Renta gown with a Noel Stewart faux leather headpiece.
As a Pandora ambassador, the star also rocked an array of jewels from the brand. She complemented her look with pink and white lab grown diamonds containing nearly 200 carats and marking Pandora's debut of pink diamonds. Her necklace was the true star of the look, as the double chain draped down her back.
Jodi Turner-Smith's Chopard Cross
The star turned heads in a white tulle Burberry dress featuring hand-embroidered ivory silk organza feather flowers.
She drew attention to the gown's plunging neckline with a large Chopard cross necklace in 18k white gold featuring 6.43 carats of pastel blue sapphires and diamonds.
Kris Jenner's Precious Emeralds
Kris Jenner and boyfriend Corey Gamble opted for matching white outfits, but the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch accented her look with more than 125 carats of Lorraine Schwartz emeralds and white and yellow diamonds.
Penélope Cruz's Chanel Sparkle
Cruz brought moody vibes with a Chanel Haute Couture bustier evening gown. The ensemble featured a train in silk tulle and silk taffetas and embellished with eight different types of French floral laces in black and silver.
The actress completed the glamorous look with a Chanel Tweed Pastel necklace and bracelet in 18K white gold, diamonds, and cultured pearls, Tweed Mademoiselle ring in 18K white gold and diamonds, and Bouton de Camélia earrings in 18K white gold and diamonds.
RosalÃa's Dior Necklace
RosalÃa made her return to the Met Gala in a black strapless gown by Dior that she paired with a chic veil. What could have been a simple look was made extra-glam by the addition of a glittering Dior Delicat necklace with white gold, diamonds and yellow diamond, by Dior Joaillerie.
Chase Stokes' Rock Star Necklaces
Stokes made his Met Gala debut alongside girlfriend Kelsea Ballerini in a black, sequin-covered Michael Kors suit. He accessorized his low-cut blazer with statement necklaces, two pendants, and two rings by Loree Rodkin and kept his signature hair in a sleek "wet" look.
Kaia Gerber's Tiffany & Co. Bling
Kaia Gerber channeled her mom Cindy Crawford's '90s glamour in a floor-length Prada gown covered in giant sequins and a voluminous hairstyle. She accented the look with delicate yet eye-catching jewelry.
The model wore a pendant, earrings, and a ring in platinum with morganite and diamonds from Tiffany & Co.
Nicole Kidman's Arm Candy
As Keith Urban helped his wife Nicole Kidman keep her balance on the Met Gala steps, her stunning accessory — a glittering bracelet worn over her white opera gloves (69 carats of diamonds, thanks to Harry Winston) — suddenly became the star of the show.
Gabrielle Union
Union's mermaid-inspired outfit was basically jewelry in itself. The shimmering high-neck Michael Kors Collection dress featured a cascading ombré scale pattern of lilac, green and teal blue. For an extra-glittery touch, she swept her hair back in a bun accented with a silver starfish brooch and statement drop earrings — all courtesy of Tiffany & Co.
Shakira's Cartier Sparkle
The only thing that could make Shakira's Met Gala debut more glamorous? Dripping in diamonds, of course.
The singer accessorized her red-hot Carolina Herrera gown with a collection of Cartier jewels: a platinum and 18k white gold brooch featuring diamonds and ruby, an 18k gold diamond necklace, an 18k white gold ring with diamonds and rubies, and an 18k white gold ring with diamonds.
Jon Batiste's Brooch
The singer accessorized his black suit and floral vest with Cartier gems: a platinum diamond brooch, a platinum necklace with yellow and white diamonds, a Cariet Tank Normale watch, a Trinity de Cartier cushion ring, and a Cartier Love ring.
Janelle Monáe proved once again why she's a red carpet pro.
The singer and actress, 38, nearly tripped on her way up the iconic Met Gala steps at the Monday, May 6 event, but recovered quickly and gracefully.
Channeling this year's dress code and theme, named "The Garden of Time" and “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" respectively, Monáe wore a custom skin-bearing Vera Wang gown made of holographic discs that curved around her body and down the design's mini-train. It also featured waist cutouts and a plunging sweetheart neckline for a dose of sexiness and a 3D appliqué that covered her collarbones.
The look also featured hand-strung crystal beads and was made from sustainably recycled plastic bottles that were molded by hand into organically shaped flowers.
Entertainment Tonight caught the moment that the singer's mermaid-style gown — and towering platform shoes — nearly got the best of her as she made her way up the staircase. After almost tripping, Monáe recovered and then started posing for spectators who clapped and cheered for her,
Before departing The Mark hotel for the Met Gala, Monáe told PEOPLE what she wished she had known at her first Met Gala: "To be present."
The Moonlight actress has become known for her avant-garde Met Gala looks over the years. At the 2023 Met Gala, she made a shocking outfit change mid-carpet. After arriving on the carpet in a large, black-and-white tweed Thom Browne tuxedo suit-dress, two men who accompanied her stripped the star of her oversized tweed jacket to unveil a sheer black tulle pannier dress that she wore over a sequined bikini.
At the 2019 Met Gala, Monáe wore a Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso-inspired dress featuring an exaggerated hip silhouette, eye and lip motifs, and a towering hat made of, well, more hats.
Kim Kardashian caused a stir at the Met Gala once again.
The reality star, 43, graced the 2024 Met staircase in yet another head-turning ensemble. Putting her signature spin on the theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” Kardashian appeared in a sheer Margiela by John Galliano dress with a lace train featuring leaves and floral accents.
Though her icy bleach-blonde hair perfectly accented the silver in her dress, she played down the rest of the look by wearing natural waves and subtle makeup, including a shimmery silver eyeshadow. She also bundled up with a simple gray shawl.
Of course, the most eye-catching part of her ensemble was her silver corset, giving her a drastically tiny waist. At one point, Kardashian appeared to get help from attendees to make her way up the steps as a result of the constraining dress.
This year’s Met Gala theme ties into the upcoming Costume Institute exhibit that will feature approximately 250 items — including 15 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span more than 400 years of history.
Kardashian has a history of making headlines at the Met Gala. She made her debut in 2013 while pregnant with her first child North West and walked the red carpet in a custom Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress created out of floral printed jersey, along with perfectly matched gloves and shoes. She attended the Gala as a plus-one to her then-boyfriend Kanye West, who wore a simple suit by Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.
The look sparked an influx of memes, some of which compared the dress’s material to a couch. In her 2019 installment of Vogue’s "Life in Looks" video series, Kardashian admitted that she was upset by the internet's response to her look.
“I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it,” she said.
In 2014, Kardashian went for a more traditional, Old Hollywood-inspired look. Alongside West in a black tux, she wore a blue strapless Lanvin gown with a black waistband and thigh-high slit.
The fashion mogul channeled Cher at the 2015 Gala in a sheer crystal-embroidered Roberto Cavalli gown with feather detailing.
In 2016, Kardashian and West wore coordinating silver ensembles inspired by the theme Manus x Machina. The star wore a metallic Balmain look, described as a "blingy, sexy, robot."
The Skims founder kept things pared down for the 2017 Met Gala, where she wore a simple off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood Couture corset dress. She also notably went jewelry-free. Months before the event, she was the victim of a robbery in Paris and later told Ellen DeGeneres she didn't know if she could wear real jewelry again.
In 2018, Kardashian glittered in a gold chainmail dress by Versace featuring embroidered crosses, leaning into the theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”
She accessorized with double cross necklaces and amped up the drama with extra-long hair and smokey eye makeup.
In 2019, Kardashian made a splash in a custom Thierry Mugler dress that was created to convey the designer's vision of her as "this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping." The outfit also featured a dramatic corset, which she later admitted made it hard for her to breathe.
"I have never felt pain like that in my life," she told the WSJ Magazine for a digital cover story in July 2019.
At the 2021 Met Gala, Kardashian shocked spectators by wearing a black Balenciaga look that covered up her entire body. The custom ensemble featured a long-sleeve turtleneck bodysuit worn under an oversized T-shirt dress with a long pleated train. She accessorized with jersey boots, jersey gloves, and a mask that covered her face — but she still wore a full face of makeup beneath it.
Perhaps her most controversial Met Gala look yet, Kardashian appeared at the 2022 event in a dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe — the very same one that the movie star wore in 1962 to serenade President John F. Kennedy with a sultry rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
The star faced backlash both for the extreme diet she underwent to fit into the dress (she revealed she lost 16 lbs. in three weeks) and for wearing a historically significant gown. There were later allegations that the dress was damaged after she wore it, though Ripley's Believe It or Not!, which owned the dress and lent it to Kardashian, denied this.
The star took glam to another level at the 2023 Met Gala, where she wore a custom Schiaparelli haute couture design featuring a draped skirt and top made from more than 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystal pearls. The gown took one dozen artisans 1,000 hours to craft.
The look was an homage to Karl Lagerfeld, the late designer that was honored at the 2023 Gala. "I wanted pearls,” Kardashian told Vogue. “I thought, 'What is more Karl?' You know, the iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of. So we wanted to just be dripping in pearls."
