I'm 23 and getting my master's degree. My parents can't help me financially, so I moved in with them to save money.

I vividly remember the day I submitted my application for graduate school. For the first time in what seemed like ages, I made a decision purely for myself. Early in my senior year at Elon University, I chose to further my education after graduation. I had already mapped out all the details before beginning the application process: I would attend New York University to pursue a master’s degree in journalism.

When I was accepted into NYU’s magazine and digital storytelling concentration—the only master’s program I applied to—I was overwhelmed with pride and couldn’t stop crying. This dream was something I had longed for and prayed hard about, and it finally came true. However, the reality of the high cost of higher education soon set in.

I called my parents to share the exciting news, and they gently reminded me that financing another degree would be entirely my responsibility. Nonetheless, they offered me the chance to live at home to save money. I am fortunate to have parents who understand how housing costs have skyrocketed while wages have not kept up. They don’t want my twin brother and me to struggle financially while we build our careers.

Without their support, obtaining a master’s degree would be nearly impossible. The relief of not having to worry about monthly rent, bills, or groceries is immense. My parents have always encouraged me to pursue what fuels me and follow my dreams. While journalism may not lead to vast wealth, it is my passion. Thanks to them, my dream has become a reality, and I have a bright future ahead.

I am deeply grateful for their unwavering support throughout my life. In the year since moving back home, I’ve taken on writing and editing assignments to advance my career and save money for tuition. Additionally, I have picked up babysitting gigs for a steady income. I try to contribute around the house as much as possible, hoping my efforts show my gratitude.

My parents have worked incredibly hard to provide my brother and me with a good life. Their support is the greatest gift as we chase our dreams and aim to build lasting careers. The best way I can repay them is by achieving the success I strive for and making the most of the opportunities they’ve given me.
