During a flight back from a luxurious 10-day trip to Paris in 2023, I realized it was time to leave my high-pressure role as a Chief Operating Officer at a coaching company.
Despite earning a multiple-six-figure salary, the constant stress, 60+ hour workweeks, and inability to cook for myself had led to severe anxiety and health issues, including daily crying and episodes of numbness. Knowing my life was consumed by work, I wanted to prioritize sleep, hobbies, and meaningful conversations.
Over a year later, I'm still in therapy, dealing with the aftermath, but I don't regret taking a pay cut. After quitting, I faced challenges finding a new job due to my unconventional background in art history and journalism, and my need for remote work due to health reasons. Ultimately, I secured a fulfilling remote position as a general manager in the hospitality industry, while also working as an AI marketing instructor and freelance writer. Although my income is now a third of what it was, I'm much happier.
Financially, I shifted my priorities from expensive city living to saving for the future. I moved in with my aunt, paying $500 in rent and covering our groceries and utilities, reducing my monthly expenses significantly. Our arrangement benefits us both; I help with substantial expenses while she cooks and does our laundry.
This living situation has also helped alleviate the loneliness of the pandemic, as my friend group dispersed across the country. I'm content with this arrangement and have no plans to change it, finding joy in contributing to a future for both myself and my aunt.
