Google, Adobe and IBM are aiming to help millions gain AI skills—here’s what to know

Major tech companies like Google, Adobe, and IBM are pouring money into initiatives that aim to increase the American workforce's understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This comes at a time when these same companies are actively developing their own AI tools.

Google's $75 Million AI Opportunity Fund

  • Google.org, the company's philanthropic arm, launched a $75 million AI Opportunity Fund dedicated to upskilling the U.S. workforce.
  • A recent $15 million grant from the fund will be split between two non-profits:
    • The Partnership for Public Service will receive $10 million to launch the Center for Federal AI, offering educational programs for government workers on AI evaluation and implementation.
    • InnovateUS will get $5 million to expand its free AI courses and workshops, doubling its reach from 50,000 to 100,000 government workers across more states.

Beyond Google: A Broader Tech Effort

  • Google isn't alone. Other tech giants are also recognizing the need to bridge the AI skills gap:
    • Adobe unveiled a global initiative to equip 30 million people with AI, digital marketing, and content creation skills by 2030.
    • IBM announced plans to collaborate with universities to educate 2 million people worldwide about AI and AI careers by 2026.
    • Several tech companies, including Microsoft, Intel, and Accenture, are part of the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium, addressing AI's impact on the future tech workforce.

Why the Push for AI Literacy?

  • Companies developing AI tools see a clear benefit in having a workforce that understands how to use them effectively.
  • Surveys show a lack of AI knowledge hinders wider AI adoption:
    • Over 60% of CEOs struggle to fully utilize AI due to a knowledge gap.
    • While business leaders recognize AI's competitive advantage, many lack a strategy to implement it.

The Demand for AI Skills

  • Many companies are actively seeking employees with AI knowledge:
    • A majority of business leaders wouldn't hire someone without AI skills.
    • Companies would prioritize a candidate with AI skills over a more experienced candidate lacking them.

The Big Picture

This increased focus on AI literacy highlights a crucial effort by tech companies to ensure their advancements benefit society as a whole. By equipping the workforce with the necessary skills, companies can unlock the full potential of AI while minimizing potential drawbacks.
