I'm a 2-time college dropout and I followed this unusual career advice to land my dream job working in a national park

A Season in the Parks: A Journey of Discovery

When I first moved to Texas, I was adrift, unsure of my path. I'd dropped out of college twice, trying my hand at teaching and hospitality. It was a friend's advice that changed everything. Inspired by the happiness she found working in Yosemite, I left school and embarked on my own adventure, starting as a restaurant host in Death Valley.

That was over eight years ago. Since then, I've worked in iconic parks like Zion, Glacier, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon, always drawn back to the allure of the outdoors. While I love my job in hospitality, it's the stunning landscapes and the unique lifestyle that keep me coming back.

Seasonal work has become a rhythm for me. Every four to six months, I pack up and head to a new national park. I've worked for various companies, but Xanterra has become a familiar name. The camaraderie among seasonal workers, whom we affectionately call "parkies," is unparalleled. We're a tight-knit community, sharing experiences, advice, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Of course, there are challenges. Pay can vary significantly, and housing conditions can range from comfortable to basic. But the rewards far outweigh the inconveniences. The opportunity to explore breathtaking landscapes, make lifelong friends, and discover personal passions is priceless.

While I don't know if I'll do seasonal work forever, it's been a transformative experience. It's taught me the value of adventure, the importance of community, and the enduring beauty of nature. As I look out at the mountains, I'm filled with gratitude for this journey and the incredible memories I've made along the way.
