According to research by Self.inc, the average American will spend $333,065 on renting in their lifetime — but this figure varies dramatically depending on where in the country you are.
Using data from Self.inc's study, the map below shows the average lifetime cost of renting in each US state, including bills and additional expenses. Note: the study assumes the average lifetime rental period spans from ages 22 to 35, based on the age people tend to start renting after leaving college and the age the typical person becomes a homeowner.
Renters in Hawaii spend more than anywhere else in the country, with average rental costs reaching $599,242 over their lifetime, or $46,096 each year. Colorado residents rank second, with the lifetime cost of renting and expenses standing at more than $540,772, on average.
The most affordable state to rent in is Kansas, where the typical person spends just $238,225 over their renting life, including expenses. Similarly affordable in Wisconsin, whose lifetime cost of renting totals an average of $240,913.
