Where Are All the Jobs? Frustrated with the Current Market
I’m at a complete loss here. It feels like every job I apply for has hundreds of other applicants, and the pay is often below average. I saw one job posting that was open for one day before closing due to the overwhelming number of applications. Even retail positions are tough to come by.
For context, I have a BA and a certificate in computer programming, but at this point, I’m open to any office job just to get a stable income. Yet, the search is brutal. It’s nearly impossible to find a long-term, full-time position—most openings are temporary or contract work. I’m not interested in that because I want stability, and benefits but it seems like true full-time roles are becoming rare.
And this isn’t a new struggle for me. I graduated during the recession in 2009 and have been dealing with job instability ever since, facing layoffs and having to leave toxic workplaces. It feels like the job market has only become more challenging over the years.
It seems like AI might be taking over some jobs? Companies seem to be going through mass layoffs while simultaneously holding off on new hires, even when it's clear they need help. My last job was severely understaffed, and we kept asking for more people, but the company refused to hire anyone.
Has anyone else noticed this trend? Is this something other people are seeing across different fields? Why are companies laying off workers while leaving so many roles vacant?
