Generational Differences in U.S. Sexual Orientation


 According to data from Statista Consumer Insights, 10 percent of U.S. adults aged 18-64 identify as homosexual, bisexual, or pansexual. The proportion of non-heterosexual identities varies significantly among generations:

  • Baby Boomers: 96% identify as heterosexual.
  • Generation X: 94% identify as heterosexual.
  • Millennials (born 1980-1994): 88% identify as heterosexual.
  • Generation Z: 79% identify as heterosexual.

Among Generation Z, the most common non-heterosexual identity is bisexual, at 11%. The proportion identifying as homosexual is relatively consistent across generations, at 3% for all except Generation Z, which is at 4%. Additionally, 1% of U.S. adults aged 18-64 prefer to identify as pansexual.
