Got a PayPal invoice you don't recognize? It could be a scam

PayPal Invoice Scam Alert: What You Need to Know

A new scam is targeting PayPal users through seemingly legitimate invoice requests. Here's everything you need to understand about this deceptive scheme and how to protect yourself.

Understanding the Scam

Scammers are exploiting PayPal's invoice system to send fake payment requests to users. These messages often come with alarming subject lines like "Reminder: You've still got a money request!" What makes this scam particularly dangerous is that these invoices are sent through PayPal's actual platform, making them appear legitimate.

How the Scam Works:

1. You receive what appears to be an official PayPal invoice

2. The message claims you owe money for a purchase or mentions a technical error

3. A phone number is provided for "support"

4. If called, scammers attempt to steal your information or install malware

Warning Signs to Watch For:

- An invoice for purchases you don't recognize

- A recipient name that doesn't match yours

- Unfamiliar sender information

- Phone numbers that don't match PayPal's official contact information

Protecting Yourself:

1. Never call phone numbers listed in suspicious invoices

2. Contact PayPal directly at their official number: 1-888-221-1161 (available 6 AM to 6 PM PST daily)

3. Report suspicious invoices through:

   - PayPal's Resolution Center

   - Email: phishing@paypal.com

If You've Been Scammed:

Enable two-factor authentication immediately:

1. Log into PayPal

2. Go to Settings > Security > 2-step verification

3. Choose between an authenticator app (recommended) or SMS verification

Additional Security Tips:

- Always verify transactions through your PayPal account directly

- Be suspicious of unexpected payment requests

- Double-check all contact information against official sources

- Report any suspicious activity immediately

Remember: PayPal will never send invoices for unauthorized purchases. When in doubt, contact PayPal's official customer service to verify any suspicious requests.a
