From Internships to a Full-Time Offer: A Computer Science Graduate's Story
Initially unsure of their academic direction, the author explored potential careers through internships before university. Two internships—one teaching at a primary school and another at a local IT company specializing in enterprise software—proved pivotal. The IT internship, particularly, sparked an interest in computer science, fueled by mentorship from the company's founder and hands-on experience in areas like cybersecurity and software engineering. This experience solidified their decision to pursue computer science in university.
University life presented its challenges. The demanding curriculum led the author to seek practical experience through further internships. A six-month internship at a newly established Singaporean headquarters of a Norwegian software company provided valuable experience in contributing to the company's expansion into the Asian market. This internship culminated in a full-time job offer.
While many peers aimed for high-profile, high-paying positions at FAANG companies (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google), the author chose a different path. They prioritized personal growth and a better work-life balance over the prestige and potentially demanding environment of FAANG companies. Driven by a long-term aspiration to become an entrepreneur, the author valued fulfilling work that allows them to support their family and maintain a good quality of life. They believe smaller companies can offer richer learning experiences, even if they don't carry the same brand recognition as FAANG.
