There are nine big cities where no properties are affordable on the local median income.
With America's house prices expected to continue climbing in 2025, you might be wondering where in the country you have the best chance of buying a home.
Luckily, NetCredit has analyzed Zillow listings, and local and national US average household incomes against the US Bank's threshold for affordable housing payments (28 percent of monthly income) to uncover the share of affordable houses across the country's 100 biggest cities.
The most affordable city in the study is Toledo, Ohio, where households on the local median salary can afford 53 percent of available properties.
When it comes to families earning the national median income — the study uses 2022's average of $74,755 — Detroit is home to the largest percentage of affordable homes (77.6 percent).
There are nine big cities with zero affordable properties on the local average income, and five of them belong to California (Oakland, San Jose, Long Beach, Fremont and Santa Ana).
