Almost 82 percent of American businesses have no employees at all, instead being run by a lone businessperson, or "solopreneur." But, where in the US are non-employer firms most profitable?
Switch On Business analyzed the latest US Census data to work out the average revenue of non-employer firms in each state and metro area, then mapped the locations where solopreneurs earn the most.
Delaware's solopreneurs make more money than those of any other state, with the average non-employer firm seeing a revenue of $72,000 a year.
New Jersey and Connecticut are tied for second place. Solopreneurs in both states earn an average of $65,000 annually.
When it comes to metropolitan areas, the best location for non-employer businesses is Southwestern Connecticut's Greater Bridgeport metro, where the average yearly revenue stands at just under $80,000.
